...we have so much to tell you!!!

 A recent Bio in the Islesboro Island News:

" “Since 1998”… It completely flabbergasts me that my “little business” was opened so long ago in NH.  Where does the time go??  In these 22 years since, the craft and love of Distinctive Furniture & Windows has had the absolute honor and distinction to be featured in Trade magazines, chosen to complete the products for photo shoots that Designers can showcase their brand to the Trade, trusted by World famous Designers to turn their visions and drawings into products and pieces that carry their reputation, and printed in National magazines sharing pictures of Celebrity Homes.  This is now, but what about then?

My Mom and Dad taught me a lot about being a self-starter and never backing down from the things I didn’t know—after all, no one is born knowing anything.  We all have to learn.  And learn I did.  I learned sewing, building, home DIY, developed a passion for home décor, etc.…everything, from both of them, by example. 

Fast forward to becoming a Mom a second time, searching for a way to stay at home.  My kids, my Family, were then, and still are, my everything.  Ever since the beginning, this has been a Family Business where we are all involved.  

I love sewing, creating, and anything to do with The Home in general—so much so that, in 1998, I was encouraged and inspired to turn my passion into a source of income to support my young family.  A couple of flips of the calendar and we land in the year 2000.  That is when the tough decisions were made—to leave NH and move our entire Family, our household, our animals, AND my Business to a little Island in Penobscot Bay.  Of course, Bumpa and Mammy (aka Buddy and Jean Bethune) were beyond excited to have one of their kids and young family move right in behind them.  So, workspaces were created and two-year-old DFW was welcomed with open arms and continued its Business, right here on Islesboro.  

Since then, we have expanded 12 times--in space, in location, in services, and in equipment.  And now, Thanks to the help and complete support of my Husband, Joshua, and all my kids, we are expanding…again! 

I have often heard that as long as your decisions come from the Heart, you'll never go wrong.  I am blessed enough to be doing what I love--and I LOVE what I do!!! Twenty years right here on Islesboro and over 22 years in Business.  Phew!

I am beyond excited to announce that I am now exclusively Full Time with Distinctive Furniture & Windows!!! New fabric samples are arriving weekly, new workspaces being created and existing ones renovated, new Design Firms added, new infrastructures being put in place, new ways of serving Clients across the United States, and, most importantly, a new Vision is being formed.  A special Thank You to all my Designer friends and colleagues for all your feedback, support, encouragement, and repeat patronage to DFW.  You have been the “proof in the pudding” for this metamorphosis of DFW.  Your feedback and guidance have been beyond invaluable.  I love hearing from Clients that they’ve been told that “Janice can do anything.  She can definitely think outside the box!”
